Susset Tamayo

Susset Tamayo is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 1 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Susset studied theatre arts and urban education at the University of Pennsylvania. As a second-generation Mexican American, Susset deeply values the cultural significance of language and how it connects us to other people. Her interest in teaching English stems from her fascination with the role of language in our lives, her experiences with bilingualism, and her time as an ESL student. Susset discovered her passion for teaching through her involvement with the Penn Reading Initiative, the West Philadelphia Tutoring Project, CityStep Penn, and Puentes de Salud. She is excited to continue exploring this passion as a PEDAL teacher this summer. When Susset isn’t teaching, she enjoys doing arts and crafts and spending time with her family.

Anran (Martina) Wang

Anran (Martina) Wang is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 1 class at PEDAL. She is a B.A. English graduate of Northeastern University (China). Prior to studying at Penn GSE, she was a TOEFL teaching assistant and IELTS speaking tutor. As an ESL learner, she deeply understands the possible difficulties encountered by people when they first come to the United States, and she is extremely passionate about drawing on these experiences, building a student-centered classroom, and helping students from all over the world. Outside of teaching, she loves exploring various types of novels.

Bingyan (Emily) Wang

Bingyan (Emily) Wang is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 2 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Emily studied Education, Communities, and Organizations at the University of Washington. She believes that learning is motivated by interests, so she wants to explore instruction that can make the class innovative and fun. She taught a data science class as a teaching assistant at the University of Washington for a year before coming to Penn GSE. When Emily isn’t teaching, she studies astrology and spends time with her friends.

Zhiheng (Hilary) Wang

Zhiheng (Hilary) Wang is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 2 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Hilary studied economics and industrial relations & human resources at the University of Toronto. As an ESL student herself, Hilary knows how difficult and challenging it might be for newcomers in the journey of learning the English language and adapting to the new western culture and environment. Therefore, she is thrilled to help newcomers just like her conquer the difficulties and challenges they might encounter along the way. During summer internships, Hilary gained precious experience working as a teaching assistant facilitating students preparing for the TOFEL and IELTS tests. When Hilary isn’t teaching, she loves learning new sports and traveling around the world with family and friends.

Ying Shen

Ying Shen is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and a co-teacher for Level 3 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Ying studied journalism at Zhejiang Wanli University (China) and communication at Northern Illinois University (U.S.). During her undergraduate years, Ying continued to experiment with volunteer teaching activities. Ying's rich overseas exchange experience got her interested in English, which has helped her to clarify her goals as a future English educator. Ying hopes that in passing on her knowledge of English, she can connect with learners from different cultural backgrounds and learn from them in mutual communication. When Ying isn’t teaching, she loves to read fiction and travel, and enjoys photography.

Minyi Zhuang

Minyi Zhuang is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 3 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Minyi studied education at University of California, Irvine. Becoming an educator has always been her aim. After working as an intern at Sesame Street English, she became interested in TESOL and decided to pursue a degree. When Minyi isn’t teaching, she likes competitive gaming and playing various musical instruments.

Yufeng (Ivan) Jin

Yufeng (Ivan) Jin is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 4 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Ivan studied cognitive science and economics at University of California, San Diego. During his undergraduate years, Ivan worked as a teaching assistant for multiple university-level courses and a part-time tutor for English language test prep classes. Growing up in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, Ivan has long been fascinated with learning and helping others to learn this language, which led him to pursue the master’s degree in TESOL. In his free time, he enjoys traveling around the world and meeting new people from different cultures.

Zhongze (Miranda) Xia

Zhongze (Miranda) Xia is a second-year M.S.Ed. TESOL student at Penn GSE and co-teaches the Level 4 Class at PEDAL. Before coming to Penn GSE, Miranda studied English at Nanjing University, China. Miranda found her passion in teaching through several tutoring projects, where she helped her students improve their English by focusing on their distinct purpose, motivation, and style of language learning. During her undergraduate studies, Miranda worked as a part-time K–12 English teacher in an educational institution to prepare elementary students for secondary schools. When Miranda isn’t teaching, she enjoys traveling with friends and taking wonderful pictures of the sites and people.

Administrative Team

Hannah Brenneman

Hannah Brenneman is a Program Assistant for Penn GSE’s Educational Linguistics Division and assists the PEDAL team with student registration, scheduling, marketing, and classroom prep. Before accepting the position as Program Assistant, Hannah graduated from the M.S.Ed. TESOL program at Penn GSE, where she worked as a PEDAL teacher from 2013-2015 and as PEDAL Program Coordinator from 2016-2017. She is thrilled to be back at Penn GSE, supporting PEDAL teachers and students alike!

 

Dr. Iryna Kozlova Dr. Iryna Kozlova

Dr. Iryna Kozlova serves as the faculty advisor to both PEDAL@GSE and Community PEDAL. She teaches masters students as a Lecturer in the Educational Linguistics Division at Penn GSE. Dr. Kozlova began her teaching career as a teacher of English as a foreign language and taught EFL to elementary through high school students for 12 years in Ukraine, Russia, and Mongolia. She has also taught ESL in Canada and the United States.
