What is PEDAL@GSE?

  • An English language program developed for family members of: Penn students, staff, and visiting professors, scholars, and post-docs to improve their everyday English skills. See the About PEDAL@GSE page for more information.

What is Community PEDAL@GSE?

  • An English language program developed for all adult English language learners of the West Philadelphia community to improve their everyday English skills.  Community PEDAL classes are run in partnership with the Walnut West branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia.  You do NOT need to be connected to the University of Pennsylvania to attend Community PEDAL@GSE classes. Who are these classes for?

  • The PEDAL@GSE English classes are for family members of Penn staff, family members of Penn students, and family members of Penn professors, visiting scholars, and post-docs (ages 17 and up).  Classes are not appropriate for Penn students, visiting scholars, faculty, or post-docs. PEDAL@GSE students may bring 1 or 2 guests with them to class.  Guest students do not have to have family members at Penn, but guests must attend with a Penn family member.  The classes are designed for novice, intermediate, advanced, and high-advanced level speakers of English.  Visit the PEDAL@GSE Classes page for more information about each level.
  • The Community PEDAL@GSE English classes are for any adult English language learner in the West Philadelphia community. The classes are designed for novice through advanced level students.  Classes are not appropriate for professional students or people who fluently use English in their professions.

How much do these classes cost?

  • All classes are absolutely FREE!

How many classes can a student attend?

  • Students can only attend one class each week.
  • Students who register for the PEDAL@GSE classes cannot also attend a Community PEDAL class.  
  • Students who register for Community PEDAL classes cannot also attend PEDAL@GSE classes.
  • Community PEDAL students must chose one class to attend each week.  For example, you cannot attend the intermediate level class and also the advanced level class. 

Who are the teachers?

  • The teachers are experienced instructors of English who are currently students in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) M.S.Ed. program at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education. The program is supervised by a Penn GSE faculty member and the PEDAL Program Coordinator.  Visit The PEDAL Team page for more information about the PEDAL Team.

How do I register?

When are classes held?

  • PEDAL@GSE classes are Friday mornings from 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. Visit the PEDAL@GSE Classes page for more information.
  • Community PEDAL@GSE classes are Monday evenings, 5-7pm, Wednesday afternoons, 12:30 p.m. –2:30 p.m., and Friday afternoons, 12:30-2:30pm at Walnut West Library. Visit the Community PEDAL@GSE Classes page for more information.
